What gets you up in the morning?
My impending cup of coffee! I’m simple like that!
What’s the best moment you’ve had as a wedding photographer?
There isn’t one specific moment, which I suppose is a bit boring, but honestly I have many special moments that make up my career and they are why I continue doing what I do. It’s the Bride crying while paging through their album, the couple taking our cameras from us to take a photo of us to include in their package, or the couple requesting a photo with us as their photographer’s, it’s doing a shot at the bar with the Bride and Bridesmaids before they’d let us leave, the groom sweeping me up in a huge bear hug, or being treated to a night at a hotel so that we could stay and enjoy the party after the contracted hours had been worked. It’s the heartfelt thank you’s, and that amazing email requesting a maternity shoot a year later.
Best thank you that you’ve ever received?
Best thank you gift was a night at the Crystal Towers Hotel, but when a couple is moved to tears when paging through their album or looking through their prints, those are the best thank you’s.
A tip or two for couples who are looking for their perfect wedding photographer.
Follow your gut! Make sure you look through portfolios and choose a photographer based on their style first, cost 2nd. These photos are your memories.
One thing you’d like every bride and groom to know before their wedding?
You will run late, something invariably will not go according to plan, AND IT’S OK!
Why is wedding photography so expensive?
Servicing and replacement/upgrade of gear, insurance, telephone and internet costs, costs of software, car insurance, fuel, advertising, branding, website costs, logo design, further training /courses, second shooter/assistant costs all factor in to the costs, and these are all before factoring in the actual hours spent on emails, location scouting, meetings and phone calls before the Big Day. Then, the hours and hours of shooting on the day, followed by the hours of post processing and editing after. Then branding, packaging and presentation of the package is added. It’s not a simple case of pitching up, clicking away and putting a few images on disc.
What makes you give yourself a mental high five?
That second you look at your camera screen and know you have captured magic!
